AAOS 2021: Here’s what Anika has in store for the Annual Meeting

Anika (with Arthrosurface and Parcus) will be showcasing two of its most groundbreaking products at this year’s annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)”. AAOS is the largest orthopedic meeting and conference in the United States, and is taking place August 31 – September 3 in San Diego, CA.

AAOS brings together surgeons, academics, investigators, and industry representatives to share the latest research and innovations in orthopedics. At the conference, Anika will be educating attendees about its wide array of products within orthopedics, including osteoarthritis pain management, regenerative solutions, soft tissue repair and bone preserving joint technologies and will be highlighting:

  • The OVO/OVOMotion® with Inlay Glenoid Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) Systems
  • Tactoset® Injectable Bone Substitute

The OVO/OVOMotion with Inlay Glenoid TSA has shown to be effective in not only active and younger patients but in all of those with glenohumeral arthritis even those facing posterior subluxation and bone erosion. This revolutionary stemless total shoulder system closely replicates native patient anatomy, preserves bone, and provides equal or better pain relief and superior range of motion compared to traditional total shoulder replacements. *Data on file

Tactoset is a biocompatible calcium phosphate, hyaluronic acid-enhanced bone graft substitute material intended for filling bone voids or defects of the skeletal system that are not intrinsic to the stability of bony structure.  This osteoconductive bone graft substitute is highly flowable and easily injectable. It interdigitates into trabecular bone architecture to fill closed bone voids and supports endogenous cell-mediated regeneration of new bone as material is resorbed.

Additionally, Anika is sponsoring 2 Innovation Theater sessions in Booth #4353 during the meeting:

  • In an Innovation Theater session entitled “Simple or Complex: Can an Anatomic Total Shoulder System Be Your Primary TSA?” Anthony Miniaci, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Sports Center, will discuss clinical insights, data, and why surgeons are adopting this system as their Primary TSA. His talk begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1 in Booth #4353.
  • Misty Suri, MD, an orthopedist with Oschsner Health in New Orleans, will highlight Tactoset and its use in a talk entitled “Addressing Insufficiency Fractures in Active Patients.” His Wednesday, September 1 presentation begins at 2PM in Booth #4353.

A New Joint Preserving Wrist Solution

Anika will also preview its newest innovation, the WristMotion® Total Wrist Arthroplasty (TWA) System.  Recently, Rhode Island surgeon Arnold-Peter C. Weiss, M.D. , a co-developer of the system, performed the first surgery on a patient using the WristMotion system.  Featured locally in a NBC news segment, the procedure’s goal is to alleviate wrist pain and restore function and mobility, while preserving as much of the native joint as possible.

“Patients suffering from wrist pain caused by arthritis or trauma are often treated by fusing the joint, which can severely limit the ability to move and use their wrist,” said Dr. Weiss, Chief Hand, Upper Extremity & Microvascular Surgery, Vice Chairman and Professor of Orthopaedics, Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University. “As the lead surgeon designer of the WristMotion TWA System design team, I’m pleased to have worked with the team at Anika to bring this solution to market and be among the first to introduce it to patients and improve their overall quality of life.”

The WristMotion TWA System is used for patients suffering from arthritis and is designed to preserve the complex motion of the wrist joint, often referred to as the “dart thrower’s” motion.
