Manager, Accounts Payable & Payroll

Location: Bedford, MA | Hybrid

Summary of Primary Responsibilities:

The Manager, Accounts Payable & Payroll Manager will lead the management of accounts payable and payroll for the US and UK operations.  In addition, the Manager, Accounts Payable & Payroll will assist in the monthly and quarterly accounting close process and reporting.  Responsibilities include adherence to the monthly and quarterly close process and timeline as well as preparation of certain month end accruals to ensure the continued integrity and accuracy of the Company’s financial results and balance sheet. 

The successful candidate will join a team committed to continuous improvement and development.  This person will enjoy leading the Accounts Payable team and developing solid business relationships with their counterparts throughout the organization to ensure efficient processing of invoices.  

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the accounts payable/payroll team
  • Review weekly payable batches for completeness and accuracy
  • Manage monthly review of open purchase orders
  • Manage travel and expense reporting and compliance through Concur
  • Review of monthly accruals related to open purchase orders and temporary help
  • Review quarterly key vendor statement reconciliations
  • Working with the Tax Manager, assist with the compilation of tax reporting items (1099, W-2, Sales & Use Taxes, Payroll taxes, etc.)
  • Oversee payroll specialist and other payroll processes
  • Oversee Workers Compensation Audit requirements
  • Manage compilation of financial data to meet Sunshine Act Reporting requirements
  • Support and adhere to strong internal control policies and procedures and identify areas where improvements can be made
  • Drive internal process improvements and continually identify opportunities for automation
  • Assist with the documentation and compliance with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Prepare required schedules and analyses for quarterly reviews and annual audits with both internal and external audit teams; interface with audit teams as needed
  • Provide accounting support for special projects and ad-hoc reporting and analysis as necessary
  • Such other duties as assigned from time-to-time

Job Complexity:

The position requires a comprehensive understanding of general accounting principles as well management experience.  Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires reconciliation and evaluation of identifiable factors.  Requires the exercises of judgement within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Team of four employees with Accounts Payable and Payroll

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years’ experience
  • Depth of skills in accounting (both financial and managerial), reporting and analysis
  • SAP experience strongly preferred
  • Concur experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in managing electronic banking applications, Bank of America CashPro preferred
  • Proficiency in processing payroll and use of ADP Workforce Now experience strongly preferred
  • Biotech/medical device and public company experience preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) required
  • Strong communication skills, ability to present financial information in a meaningful, understandable way both internally and externally
  • Ability to question norms and respectfully challenge others
  • Good team building skills including trust, professionalism, and be able to garner consensus across diverse groups
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently and collaboratively with strong organizational skills 
  • Robust internal controls understanding and documentation of relevant financial processes and transactions
  • Detail oriented, ability to accomplish multiple tasks within the agreed upon timeframes through effective prioritization of duties and functions in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work in a time-sensitive environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft office suits and related tools
  • Experience developing and maintaining key performance indicators
