Toe Implants
Toe HemiCAP DF and ToeMotion Arthroplasty System
Are you living with toe pain? Have you been diagnosed with arthritis of the toe (Hallux Rigidus) that is preventing you from doing the activities that you love? Many patients with toe pain or Hallux Rigidus are looking for alternative treatment options to a Toe Fusion Procedure, as they want to maintain range of motion in their big toe joint. Anika’s Toe Implant Systems are expertly designed to preserve motion, remove minimal bone and allow patients to resume desired activity levels.
Arthritis of the toe can lead to deterioration, loss of cartilage, and the formation of painful bone spurs that can limit the range of motion of the toe joint. If the pain interferes with your life, surgery can help. Anika’s joint preservation toe implants prevent further damage to the joint while maintaining the patient’s natural motion. This is unlike a traditional toe fusion procedure, which reduces pain but also keeps your toes from bending.
The Toe HemiCAP® DF is implanted on the metatarsal side of the joint and is considered a hemiarthroplasty procedure. It is indicated for patients with degenerative and post-traumatic arthritis in the metatarsal joint in the presence of good bone stock along with the following clinical conditions: hallux valgus or hallux rigidus, and an unstable or painful metatarsal/phalangeal (MTP) joint. The Toe HemiCAP DF replaces only the diseased area of the toe joint and recreates the native shape of the bone. The expert design of the system allows for range of motion and reduced pain.
For patients with extensive damage on both sides of the toe joint, Anika also provides a total toe implant, the ToeMotion®, that consists of the Toe HemiCAP DF implant on the metatarsal side of the joint and a metal baseplate with plastic insert for the opposing (phalangeal) side of the toe joint. The ToeMotion is different than other replacements because it is implanted into the bone rather than on top, leaving natural bone to support the implant around its edges. This type of implant placement does not disturb surrounding tissue attachments which are needed to maintain stability and lift-off for walking. The Anika ToeMotion is also the only total toe replacement that is implanted with screws on both sides of the joint to provide rock-solid fixation.
With ToeMotion, patients now have a surgery option that is minimally invasive, stable and motion-preserving, allowing them to retain their active lifestyles.
Patient Benefits
- Custom matched and fit to a patient’s joint size and shape
- Significantly less cartilage and bone is removed than traditional joint replacements
- Implant is placed into the bone rather than on top, allowing for stability and lift-off when walking
- Preserves natural joint motion and native anatomy
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Potential to “unfuse” a toe joint with the ToeMotion system, essentially restoring motion to the toe when a fusion plate is revised to our implant
